The Year That Shapes the Next Two
Year 9 is the last year before GCSE content begins — and it is one of the most important. Students who use Year 9 well arrive at Year 10 with strong foundations, familiar exam skills, and a clear sense of what their chosen subjects require. Those who do not often spend much of Year 10 catching up.
Our Year 9 programme focuses on closing the final KS3 gaps, introducing early GCSE content, building exam technique, and helping students make informed subject choices. The result is a Year 10 start that is confident rather than frantic.

Curriculum
What's Covered in Year 9
Closing KS3 gaps, previewing GCSE content, and building the exam skills your child needs before Year 10 begins.
Mathematics
Completing KS3 Maths and beginning early GCSE topics — algebra, number, geometry, and statistics. We ensure no topic from Years 7 and 8 is still a gap when GCSE content begins.
English
Analytical writing, language analysis, literature study, and comprehension skills — building the exact abilities that GCSE English Language and Literature assess from Year 10 onwards.
Science
Consolidating KS3 Biology, Chemistry, and Physics and beginning GCSE-level content in each discipline. Students who preview GCSE science in Year 9 have a significant advantage in Year 10.
Exam Skills
Introduction to GCSE exam formats, mark schemes, extended writing under timed conditions, and question analysis strategies. Built into every subject session throughout the year.
GCSE Subject Guidance
Our subject specialists discuss the demands of GCSE Maths, English, and Science so students can make informed choices — not just go on what their friends are picking.
Year 10 Readiness
By the end of Year 9 at Ark, students are ready to hit the ground running. Strong knowledge, good study habits, and early exam familiarity means no wasted time when Year 10 begins.

Liyana MendisParent · Daughter in Year 9
"We started Year 9 tuition because we did not want to leave GCSE preparation to Year 10. The Ark tutors were excellent at explaining what each GCSE subject involves — it really helped my son choose his options with confidence rather than guessing."
Anjali SharmaParent · Son in Year 9
"The Year 9 programme was exactly what my daughter needed. She went into Year 10 already familiar with how GCSE questions are structured. Her first set of school mock results were outstanding — the early preparation made all the difference."
Sara PatelParent · Daughter in Year 9
"Small groups at maximum six students means my son is not invisible in the class. He gets feedback every session and the tutors know exactly where his weaknesses are. We will definitely be continuing with Ark through his GCSEs."

Yes — in the second half of Year 9, we begin previewing key GCSE topics in each subject. This is not full GCSE teaching, but a carefully chosen introduction that gives students a significant advantage when Year 10 begins.
